Let's do this together.
Getting involved at St. Andrew’s is one of the most meaningful ways to deepen your faith and build lasting connections within the community. Worship is just the beginning; true spiritual growth happens through relationships, service, and shared experiences. Whether you’re new or have been attending for years, there is a place for you to belong, to serve, and to grow alongside others on your faith journey.

Serve in Worship
These behind-the-scenes volunteers prepare the altar for each service and keep sacred vessels and liturgical items (including linens, candles, and Communion supplies) in good order.
These are trained laypersons who assist the priest at the altar and with the distribution of Communion. They may also perform other duties in the service including leading prayers or serving as lectors.
Lectors proclaim the Word of God during services by reading aloud the Old and New Testament readings and leading the recitation of the Psalms.
Members of this guild prepare, arrange and rotate flowers and greenery to grace the altar and enhance our worship space.
Ushers welcome visitors, distribute service bulletins, assist those with special needs, pass collection plates, and help to trouble-shoot issues that arise.
These volunteers keep the audiovisual equipment in good working order so that the congregation can hear the prayers, readings and liturgy, and ensure that services are recorded and livestreamed.
Individuals, friends, and families may volunteer to carry forward the bread and the wine to be used in the Communion service, representing our collective gratitude for the gifts with which God has blessed us.
Serve in the Community
St. Andrew’s shows care for our neighbors in need by preparing over 30 meals each Monday (adding a soup day in winter to provide an additional 30 meals), partnering with Okra Abbey to distribute the meals until our Community Fridge is back in place on Hickory Street. In the spring, St. Andrew’s School students prepare sandwiches and snack bags, with 50 sandwiches per week distributed to those in need in the neighborhood on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The ministry also includes collaborating with Troop 48 Venture Scouts to serve 60 meals once a month at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, and supporting community closets with clothing, blankets, shoes, and toiletries. Other special collections support medical missions or provision of household goods. Parishioners can support in a variety of ways, from shopping and donating to cooking and serving to purchasing plates during fundraisers.
St. Andrew’s largest and most recognized community event requires many hands! Our October pumpkin patch brings joy to families and neighbors from all walks of life, with a wide selection and fun for all ages. Volunteers are needed to help with planning, set up, unloading, sales, hospitality and cleanup.
St. Andrew’s is home to Pack 48 (and associated Troop 48), started in 1929 and the oldest continually operating pack in New Orleans. Scouts include boys and girls, and are drawn from many area schools. Venture Scouting for high school and college students is also available via Venturing Crew 48.

In partnership with the Episcopal Prison Ministry, volunteers from St. Andrew’s make regular visits to the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola to lead spiritual and educational programs including the Kairos ministry and Disciples of Christ in Community (DOCC) classes. More information is available on the Diocesan website or by contacting Hampton Carver.
This committee promotes awareness of environmental stewardship, leads eco-friendly initiatives of the parish, and provides information on how we can protect “our fragile island home.” The goal is to help us focus on care of God’s creation by changing habits and choices in order to live more simply, humbly and gently on the earth.
St. Andrew’s is home to a beloved flock of free-range hens, who supply the feeding ministry with fresh eggs and bring joy to passersby. Volunteers help with care and feeding of the chickens and maintenance of their coop.
This facilitated 8-week small group program supports people experiencing grief – no matter how recent or long-ago – to acknowledge their loss, share stories, be accompanied in their journey, and find healing.
